[edit]Hello, I don't know why you included all these templates in the maps about Ancient Greece, but these templates are providing categorizations on their own and prevent including other categorizations (deliberate less or more detailed). That is why I removed all these categories, like here. "Category:Maps" or "Category:Greece" are too broad. My best greetings, --Enyavar (talk) 15:50, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Re: Des imprécisions dans la carte
[edit]Bonjour.
Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 05:39, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Sting Bien que vous ne vous souveniez probablement pas de quel site. Merci beaucoup pour la réponse.Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 05:53, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
Sting (talk) 15:04, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Sting Merci pour la réponse. Je commence doucement à traduire les titres. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 16:19, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
[edit]
Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

A Greek version of your map of ancient Greece
[edit]Hi! My congratulations for the magnificent map of Greece you created! I wanted to know if there is a project to translate it back to Classical Greek and, in that case, if I could help in some way. Anaxicrates (talk) 22:44, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for the recognition! When I made this map, I was planning to translate it into Ancient Greek and Latin, but I don't have the desire or time right now. I'm busy with another project right now. If you want to help translate it into Latin and Ancient Greek, it might help you a lot if you translate it by hand! That can help you too! But it will be difficult because the names that are put on the curved line, they are individual letters. Why is that? The wiki engine on wikimedia commons doesn't handle the outline effect of overlaying text on an outline. And in this case the SVG Translate tool may not help - I don't know, I haven't worked with it. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
- In the future maybe I'll start translating this map into Latin or Ancient Greek I don't know, but if I'm going to do it I'll call you guys! Go for it! Translated with DeepL.com (free version) Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 05:22, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- This tool helps to determine whether an SVG file can be uploaded to wikimedia Commons or not. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 05:25, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Пётр Тарасьев: Sorry if I reply only now, but I did not receive any notification of your answer.
- Great news: I've decided to translate the map into Ancient Greek! Thanks for the information and the suggestions you provided! I'm planning to edit the map with Inkscape. Could I ask your help if, in some cases, I don't find the Latin/Greek equivalent to a Russian name? Could you also confirm that, if I translate just the Physical map, it can easily be converted into the Ethnic map (the other version of your map)?
- I've decided to enter the names in the map myself, but also to ask some help to find the original toponyms. To that end, I've divided the map into areas: I'm looking for collaborators to provide me the toponyms to enter in each quadrant, then I'm going to revise them and to add them to the map.
- You've already mentioned that you don't have much time or will to translate the whole map, but only in case I don't find as many collaborators as I would like (at the moment I've found two out of nine, but I can contact a lot more people), would you consider providing me a list of toponyms for just one area?
- Thanks, and again my respect for the astonishing mapping work you have done! Anaxicrates (talk) 05:56, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates:
- 1. Feel free to ask me anything!
- 2. As I understand it, you decided to make maps in ancient Greek and Latin. My map was made from the Latin original - c:File:Ancient Greece (Droysen).jpg
- 3. My physical map file already contains an ethnic map. I suggest you make a stream on Discord to help you. Do you have Discord? Will this be your first time working in Inkscape?
- 4. I offer you a different work plan: you need to divide the amount of work not into areas, but into layers in a file. I can show you how to work in Inkscape. All you need is Discord. I warn you right away that my English is bad.
- 5. Thanks for the recognition!)))
- P.S.:
- I'm waiting for your reply. I will drown with my project due to the possible blocking of Wikimedia in Russia.
- Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 06:53, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Пётр Тарасьев: :
- 1. Thank you very much!
- 2. I'd already read that. However, I'm translating the map in Ancient Greek, not in Latin, at the moment.
- 3. No, it's my second time working with Inkscape. I'm not an expert but I can get things done. I've found the (hidden) layer with the ethnic map colours. I have Discord, but it's a long time I don't use it.
- 4. I think that would be more difficult for the people helping me: I want them to be able to simply look at the Latin original map and to present me lists of toponyms: in this way, only I need to have Inkscape (and to be able to use it). Anyway, I would be happy to connect with you through Discord, also to know and compliment you in person. Is your English bad? That's good: I cannot understand English native speakers. Eheh! Also my pronunciation isn't very good. I cannot do that today, but I could tomorrow evening.
- 5. You are welcome!
- P.S.: I'm pretty confident that this will not happen. That could regard disinformation, but not Wikipedia in general, I think. Anaxicrates (talk) 08:38, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- Hi, Пётр! How are you? The work with the map is 85% done, and I hope to publish it in the next weeks! I will need a little help at the end. For now, I'd just like to ask you, what are your sources for a "м. Диктинней" (Diktynnaion promontory) and a "р. Марий" (Marios river) in Laconia? I could not find any reference whatsoever to them. What sources did you use, besides Droysen? Thanks! Anaxicrates (talk) 05:33, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Cool! You are great! About "Марий". Marius is a city, it is also on Droysen's map and a river is named after it. The story with "Dictyneus" is as follows: Droysen's map does not have this cape, but this map was copied into Dvoretsky's ancient Greek-Russian dictionary. At the end of this dictionary there is a replica of this map and this cape is there. Strabo mentions under this toponym a mountain near the city of Cydonia (western Crete) - book X, IV, 13 and V, 1. There was nothing about this toponym in other sources. This toponym is appropriate because Dvoretsky's Ancient Greek-Russian Dictionary was cited as a source. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 15:03, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! Your source is Dvoretsky, then. It would be nice to know if there are actual ancient sources. In the Pauly Encyclopedia, I've found that there is nowadays a "Mari" stream near the "Mari" village (= ancient Marios), so that's the source. Regarding Dictynnaeus, I've found something regarding the cape in Crete, but nothing about Laconia. Anaxicrates (talk) 22:50, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates I have recently mastered geographic information systems and can redraw my map in a new style and with high topographic accuracy. But I don't even want to start this project))) Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 15:16, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Ahahah, I understand that. For now, I'm just relocating imprecisely-located toponyms, and adding a few missing ones. One thing I'd like to do - but I don't know how difficult this is to do - is to change the base map in an automatic way: I'd like to adapt an accurate modern elevation profile map to the style of your map. The only reason why I'd like to do this is to improve the representation of mountains: Droysen in the 800s had a bad knowledge of mountains, especially in Asia. Anaxicrates (talk) 22:58, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Are you working as a group on a map? Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 12:45, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- No. Even if other people have given me some help in finding the Greek toponyms, I'm the only one working on the map. Anaxicrates (talk) 19:21, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 12:50, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! Anaxicrates (talk) 22:19, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- I've actually created a base map using satellite elevation data. Here is a PNG version of it. I've used the same colors that you used, so that you can compare the two elevation maps: Droysen is not too far from the truth, in most cases, but I was able to notice his ignorance of some areas because of the level of detail of his map: numerous places are included, and sometimes I just notice that their actual location cannot be properly represented within Droysen's geography: at their real coordinates, I don't find the expected geographic features (e.g., a mountain/a river). Significant problems arise when a mountain or a river are incorrectly placed by Droysen. However, in most cases Droysen is a sufficiently good approximation.
- By the way, I've employed a secant conic projection. Do you know what is the actual projection of your (and Droysen's) map? I could only try to guess! For now, I won't use this base map, however, since it would require too much work to adjust all the other features and toponyms. I should also add rivers and lakes first. Anaxicrates (talk) 06:24, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates I couldn't open that link, but I can imagine it. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 07:05, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry, I was not aware of what Dropbox is doing. By the way, I'm sorry for this senseless war that our self-proclaimed "elite" is waging against you... By the way, I've uploaded the elevation basemap directly on Wikimedia Commons.
- May I also ask you a question (I'm not completely familiar with Inkscape)? When I find a curved toponym, I cannot edit the name as a whole, but just one letter at a time (or, alternatively, I can delete it altogether and redraw it). Is there a way I can edit a curved name as a whole, instead of one letter at a time, as far as you know? Thanks! Anaxicrates (talk) 07:07, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates No, you can't edit the entire phrase. That's because the Commons engine can't handle Inkscape's outline effects. So I made the letters separately. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 11:28, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- Good to know! I hope I've not created some incompatible text path!
- So, what you did was really creating a new text for each letter (in the case of curved words)? Or did you write the complete name, curved it, and split it in single letters afterwards? Anaxicrates (talk) 05:46, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates first option Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 06:07, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. Anaxicrates (talk) 16:52, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates first option Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 06:07, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates This map is cool! But I think the coastline is overstated in this map. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 11:33, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, it is indeed "overstated", anything you mean with this expression! It is overstated in the sense that it shows too many details, and it is overstated in the sense that it shows the modern coastline, which "conquered" land from the sea over the centuries, due to alluviation. I don't know which one you mean, but both are true. Both issues need to be solved before using this as a basemap (the "too much detail" issue needs to be fixed, if we want to draw a blue line for the coast: I avoided doing that for now, because too many islets, or actually sandbanks, are represented in this map for that). As I said, I don't know if I'll ever use this basemap: it requires much work. Anaxicrates (talk) 05:58, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates At one time I made a tutorial on how to create such maps tutorial. You can use artificial intelligence to translate it automatically or use the built-in translator. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 06:13, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates By "high coastline" I mean a higher sea line. This makes the map seem "submerged". You can compare your map with Google Maps. I believe that a modern map can be used to show the current position of ancient city ruins. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 06:17, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, I had not noticed that. Now, 0 m is the threshold between land and sea, which seems logical, but perhaps conceals some lowlands. Now, I'll read your tutorial. Anaxicrates (talk) 17:00, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates are you on telegram? Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 06:19, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yes. I've sent you an e-mail with my phone number. Anaxicrates (talk) 16:51, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates No, you can't edit the entire phrase. That's because the Commons engine can't handle Inkscape's outline effects. So I made the letters separately. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 11:28, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates I couldn't open that link, but I can imagine it. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 07:05, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Anaxicrates I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 12:50, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- No. Even if other people have given me some help in finding the Greek toponyms, I'm the only one working on the map. Anaxicrates (talk) 19:21, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Are you working as a group on a map? Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 12:45, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Well done! The worst is over, hang in there!))) Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 16:12, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi! The work is 60% done. Sorry but it just takes a long time. Anaxicrates (talk) 15:19, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!
[edit]
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Re : How do you make a topographic map?
[edit]Hello.
The basic steps to create a physical map start with the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) tool, a software like QGIS, in which we import GIS data which will be bitmap (elevation) and vector (shorelines, rivers, etc.). In the GIS software we create the map with all the data we want to appear, give the wanted colors to the different elevation levels, blend these colors or not, re-project the map, specify the geographic limits, etc. We then export the data for further work in software like Gimp (bitmap) and Inkscape (vector), the latest being also used to create the final version of the map if it’s uploaded to Wikimedia in the svg format (with the bitmap background embedded in the file).
You can find a tutorial with QGIS here. The list of all the available tutorials is here. There are more tutorials on this subject on WP-fr (in French). If your map is intended for Wikimedia, I recommend following the conventions in order to keep the unity in the project.
I understand that creating your first map can be challenging, so if you prefer you can ask skilled contributors to do it for you.
I hope this helps. Sting (talk) 20:20, 14 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Sting, thank you very much! Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 05:31, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Sting, Have you used the Global Mapper program? Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 07:42, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I use Global Mapper, an old version which still fits my needs. Sting (talk) 13:24, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Sting, Someone taught me how to make topographic maps in Global Mapper and I will make maps there. Can I contact you with questions? Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 08:14, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
- Sure. I'm not a specialist and there are many tools I don't use in Global Mapper, but if I can help, I will. Sting (talk) 14:19, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
